Manikkavachakar
Historical background
One of the four most important Shaiva saints (9th cent.). He became an important figure at the Pandya court in Madurai but after a series of dramatic events he renounced the world and wandered through South India and further afield singing the praises of Shiva.

Description: Top row (partly disappeared). On the right: Manikkavachakar sings his poems and a Shaiva mendicant copies them. Bottom row (partly disappeared): The next morning, the priests open the Nataraja shrine and find the manuscript with the songs; Manikkavachakar explains to them the meaning of the songs.

Description: The king, perhaps Varagunavarman II (aka Arimarttana Pandya) gives a neacklace to Manikkavachakar. A brahmin stands behind the king, and two men, the first with a sword and the second with a palm-leaf manuscript are shown behind the dignitary. (TP 59)
