Historical background
Weddings are a theme which the artists explored in depth. Of interest are the various details showing the different rituals followed by the various communities to which the artists’ patrons belonged.

Description: Top: The wedding of Minakshi and Sundareshvara. Bottom: Minakshi gives the sceptre to Queen Mangammal via an intermediary priest at the presence of attendants and courtiers.

Date: Second half of the 17th century
Description: From bottom to top: Shiva’s wedding and the birth of Kumara. 1) Manmatha shoots an arrow at Shiva; Shiva and Parvati’s dalliance; 2) Shiva’s wedding at the presence of the gods, the rishis and other celestial beings; 3) The gods interrupt Shiva’s love making; Parvati goes away; Agni collects Shiva’s semen and deposits in the Ganga. There, it becomes a beautiful baby, Kumara. He transforms himself into six babies who are nursed by the six Krittikas (the Pleiades).

Scene in a building: Kaikeyi lying on a cot in the ‘sulking room’ with Manthara and a servant. Rama and Lakshmana take leave of Dasharatha and Kaikeyi.
