Historical background
Particularly interesting are the schematic renderings of many temples. The deities are shown in their own shrines along with the typical natural features of the site, enabling thus the viewer to identify them.

Description: 108 Srivaishnava divyadeshams. 1) Sri Vijayaraghava, of Tiruputkuli, seated flanked on the left by Markatavalli Nacchiyar, and by Garudarajan, on the right. 2) Sri Nityakalyana of Tiruvidavendadai (Tiruvendadai) standing, flanked by Komalavalli Nacchiyar on the left, and by Markandeya on the right. 3) Sri Sthalashayana Perumal of Tirukadalmallai (Mamallapuram) reclining on Shesha. Brahma emerges from the lotus issuing from Sthalashayana Perumal’s navel. In the top left corner is Pundarikavalli Nacchiyar, two consorts sit behind the god, and Butha alvar stands at his feet.

Brahma emerges from the lotus issuing from Sthalashayana Perumal’s navel. In the top left corner is Pundarikavalli Nacchiyar; Two consorts sit behind the god and Butha alvar stands at his feet. 2) Sri Nirvannan of Tirunirmalai (Malai Adivara Koyil) standing flanked by Sri Animamalarmangai Nacchiyar on the left and Valmiki maharishi on the right. The inscription mentions the Sva pushkarini (tank) i.e. the Svarna pushkarini; 3)Tirunirmalai (Malai Mel Koyil). Top row: Sri Ranganatha, Sri Trivikrama; Bottom row: Yoga Narasimha flanked by Prahlada; Sri Chakravarti Tirumahan flanked by Sita, Hanuman and Lakshmana.

Description: 108 Srivaishnava divyadeshams. 1) Sri Parthasarathi of Tiruvallikkeni (Triplicane, Chennai) standing, flanked on the left by Rukmini, Sankarshana and Satyaki and on the right by Pradyumna, Aniruddha, two more royal figures and an alvar. Two rishis and a royal devotee are depicted in the foreground. 2) Sri Viraraghava Perumal of Tiru Evvul (Tiiruvallur) reclining on Shesha; In the foreground, on the left, Kanakavalli Nacchiyar, on the right, Salihotra muni. The inscription mentions the Hritapapanasini pushkarini (tank). 3) Sri Bhaktavatsalam of Tiruninravur, flanked on the left by the goddess, and on the right by Samudrarajan (?). 4) Tirukkadikai Sholingur, Sri Yoganarasimha. In the foreground, Amritapalavalli (Amritavalli) Nacchiyar, and an expanse of water. On the right Hanuman carrying the chakra and the shankha.

Description: 108 Srivaishnava divyadeshams. 1) Sri Chakravarti Tirumahan (i.e. Rama) inTiru Ayodhi (Ayodhya). Rama and Sita enthroned. Behind them, on the left, Lakshmana waves a fly whisk; on the right, Bharata holds an umbrella, Shatrughna a fly whisk and a sceptre. Hanuman kneels before Rama holding his foot. The couple are surrounded by rishis and their allies. 2) Sri Devarajan of Naimisharanyam standing flanked on the left by Sudharman Devamaharishi, Sri Harilakshmi, Pundarikavalli Thayar and Indra, on the right. The inscription mentions the Gomti River. 3) Sri Govardhanesan at Tiruvadamaturai (Govardhan) flanked by Devaraja (Indra) on the left and Satyabhama on the right. 4) Sri Radhakrishna of Vrindavanam, on the bank of the river Yamuna.

Description: 108 Srivaishnava divyadeshams. 1) Sri Radhakrishna in Vrindavanam with Radha on the banks of the Yamuna and Govardhanan (Govardhanadhara) flanked by cowherds and cows, on the left, and by Yadava cowherds on the right. 2) Sri Navamohana Krishnan (Manamohana Krishna) of Gokul, flanked by Rukmini on thel left, and Devaki and Vasudeva, on the right. 3) Sri Nilamegha Perumal of Kandamenum Katinagar (Thirukandaghatinagar, i.e. Deva Prayag) standing flanked by Bharadvaja muni on the left and Pundarikavalli Thayar on the right. In the left upper corner is the Vishnuganga (Alakaganga) and in the right upper corner the Bhagirathi river. The two rivers meet at Deva Prayag and become the Ganga. 4) Sri Adinarayana of Haridwara seated on Shesha with Adilakshmi Thayar. In the upper left corner, Bhagiratha (?); In the upper right corner, the sage Shuka.

River, on the right, Sridevi (?). 3) Sri Badrinarayanan of Badrikaskshetram (Badrinath) seated. On the left Nara and Garuda; On the right are Narayanan, Badri maharishi; Lakshmi (?) and Narada (?). In the background, left are the two hot water springs: Taptakunda and Suryakunda.
