Historical background
Depictions of festivals and the various concomitant rituals provide an invaluable source of information. Many of the present-days festivals bear a strong resemblance to those depicted in the murals.

Description: Panguni Uttaram festival. On the extreme right, the hoisting of the flag, and the gods floating on a cloud pay homage to Tyagaraja’s icon; The images carried in procession under a shower of flowers.

Description: Vasantotsava (Spring festival) fireworks. The eight dikpalas, Narada and Tumburu look on from the sky, while the gandharvas let a rain of petals fall on the images of Shiva Vrishabhavahana; The image of Chandrashekhara followed by those of his consorts is carried in procession. Fireworks enliven the event.

Description: Vasantotsava (Spring festival) celebrations; Chandrashekhara in procession (left). A nobleman pays homage to the image, and the person standing behind him is, possibly, a painter. On the right, crowds surround an elephant carrying an empty swing pavilion. On the flag are Shiva’s bull, Nandi, and the god’s trident.
