Historical background
Particularly interesting are the schematic renderings of many temples. The deities are shown in their own shrines along with the typical natural features of the site, enabling thus the viewer to identify them.

Description: Vedapurishvara temple at Tiruvottur, now known as Ceyyar (Tiruvannamalai district). According to the legend, it is here that Sambandar by his miraculous powers transformed male palm trees into a female palm trees.

Description: The king, perhaps Varagunavarman II (aka Arimarttana Pandya) gives a neacklace to Manikkavachakar. A brahmin stands behind the king, and two men, the first with a sword and the second with a palm-leaf manuscript are shown behind the dignitary. (TP 59)
